We're spoilt for choice and it's no different when it comes to mouthguards. There are many types of mouthguards available in Australia, ranging from lower cost over-the-counter types to professionally custom fitted mouthguards (which we provide!).

Based on the Australian Dental Association (ADA), it is strongly recommended that one should wear a custom-fitted mouthguard to ensure maximum protection –  protect those pearly whites!

The cheap over-the-counter mouthguards is simply not enough protection against injuries to teeth, mouth, or jaw. Especially if you're into sports!

Why are custom made mouthguard essential for those who play sport?

Custom fitted mouthguard should be worn whilst playing or training for any sport, especially where there is a possibility of contact with the face. Sports such as hockey, netball, boxing, baseball, basketball and even skateboarding and skiing.

It's really no different to having the correct shoes and sporting equipment!

Remember: Dental injuries can result in time off from your life and can be painful, disfiguring and may involve lengthy and complex dental treatment. Prevention is key!

How are custom-fitted mouthguards made?

A qualified dentist takes an impression and creates a plaster model of your teeth. This allows your dentist to accurately assess your mouth and to provide the best fitting mouthguard uniquely made for you.

A perfectly custom-made mouthguard will suit your individual needs and is:

Comfortable

Well-fitting

Won't shift or fall out

Won't restrict your breathing

Why should you stay away from over-the-counter (boil & bite) mouthguards?

Mass produced, over-the-counter mouthguards are far less effective in comparison to the custom-made product. They do not require fitting and are simply made to be placed in hot water and self-fitted by biting into the mould.

How long will your mouthguard last?

Firstly, it's important for you to have your mouthguard assessed by your dentist at your regular dental check-up to ensure it still fits correctly for maximum protection.

If your secondary adult teeth have come through or if your mouthguard has been damaged then you may need a replacement.

If you've already got a custom-fitted mouthguard – good for you! Here's what you must do to care for your mouthguard:

Rinse in cold water after use

Store in rigid plastic container

Keep out of direct sunlight -  mouthguards will change shape in high temperatures

Has your mouthguard been assessed by your dentist at your regular dental check-up?

Replace your mouthguard if it's damaged
