Root canal treatment is a procedure that involves removing inflamed or infected tissue of the nerve (also known as a pulp) from the inside of a tooth to allow a tooth that was causing pain to be saved.

After the pulp has been removed, the root canals are cleaned, sterilised, and completely sealed with a filling material. In most cases, a crown will need to be added to completely seal the tooth.

Root canal treatment often takes several dental visits, depending on the complexity of the problem and how long the infection takes to clear.

In some cases a referral to a specialist is needed.

Factors that can contribute to the need for endodontic therapy include:

• Toothache and sensitivity
• Tenderness when chewing
• Trauma to the tooth or jaw
• Deep tooth decay
• Severe gum disease
